LIFE SAFETY COUNCIL
Roles and Responsibilities:


  Mission:

Enhance the Life Safety and Security for the public venues and position management professionals as leaders internationally in life safety, crowd management, and related security concerns by providing (1) a cohesive and unified life safety /security training programs, initiatives, and products; (2) “best practice” guidelines for emergency preparedness and crises management, and (3) industry representation of legislative issues and positions of advocacy for the association and the industry it serves.

Back Ground: The Life Safety Council (LSC) consolidates several IAAM task forces, committees, and initiatives: Safety and Security Task Force, International Crowd Management Committee, NFPA, TEAM Coalition, Professional Development, etc.

 


Roles and Responsibilities:

Structure: Reporting to the President, the LSC has a Chair and Vice Chair appointed annually by the incoming President (1ST VP) and is comprised of [a minimum of] nine (9) members, (A) two (2) members representing LSC programs [chair – Academy fro Venue Safety and security (AVSS), chair – International Crowd Management Conference, (B) two (2) members by virtue of positions held [chair or member liaison- Professional Development Committee (PDC), chair or member liaison – External Affairs Committee (EAC). (C) two (2) members which are at-large appointments, [member liaison and/or alternate – National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), member liaison and/or alternate – TEAM Coalition], and (D) a minimum of three (3) at-large appointments filled by the appointment of the Council’s Chairperson representing any of the following: Architectural, Leagues, Promoters, Food and Beverage, Medical, or Security Companies. Ex-Officio delegates shall include at a minimum the IAAM’s Legal Counsel and a staff representative of Life Safety and Security.

Meetings/Reports: The LSC shall meet three (3) times each year, at the annual conference and trade show and, where required at the determination of the Chair and a majority of the committee, two (2) other times as may be scheduled at WHQ and/or at a common specialty meeting that is convenient and cost efficient given the geographic dispersal of LSC membership. Provide minutes of each meeting to committee and WHQ staff [Directors – Board Services; Professional Development] and submit reports to President/CEO at specified times prior to mid-winter Board of Directors (BOD) meeting (December each year) and Annual Conference

Goal(s): Ensure the provision of and assist IAAM staff in providing quality programming and products related to the life safety and security of the public assembly facility industry. Coordinate IAAM’s efforts in developing and maintaining life safety precepts in relationships with regulatory/government agencies, industry groups, and the general public to include, but not be limited to, rigging safety, blood borne pathogens, hazardous material, OSHA, crowd management, alcohol management, etc. The chair will establish coordinated efforts with WHQ staff in the following areas: Education programming; Promotions (sales/marketing) and Public Relations/Advocacy; Operations/ Meeting Planning; Financial and Budgetary Requirements.

Objectives:
1. Crowd Management: The Crowd Management Committee shall annually produce an International Crowd Management Conference (ICMC) designed to provide training and development in the rudiments of crowd management techniques.
2. Annual Conference Programming: Identify and develop relevant life safety / security issues and speakers that will proactively provide programming relevant to life safety and security issues for the Annual Conference & Trade Show that enhances the venue management work place and value to IAAM members.
3. Safety and Security: The AVSS Curriculum Advisory Committee shall provide general oversight of industry “best practices” for safety and security protocols and related disciplines including, but not limited to, rigging safety, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, terrorism, etc. Reviews and recommends benchmarks and guidelines to help venue managers in revising and updating security and crisis management plans, evacuation procedures. Committee assists in the production of the Academy for Venue Safety & Security (AVSS) providing hands-on training for professionals in emergency preparedness, crises communication, and risk / threat analysis.
4. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): Represent IAAM on the NFPA Safety to Live Technical Committee responsible for the development of Educational and Assembly Occupancies of the Life Safety Code (portion of the US national fire code dealing with public assembly occupancies. Position consists of a delegate and an alternate, and candidates must be approved by NFPA.
5. TEAM Coalition: Effective alcohol management practices play a large part in providing a safe and secure environment at many public assembly venues. As such, IAAM actively participates with the TEAM (Techniques of Effective Alcohol Management) Coalition, Inc.
6. Products: Provide technical input and review to PDC for IAAM educational products as relates to Life Safety / Security Issues including, but not limited to, rigging safety, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, etc. Products may consist of video training programs, audio/internet conferences, and resource materials.
7. Advocacy. Actively establish IAAM ‘profile’ and ‘position’ the association through articles, position statement, white papers, press releases, and legislation as it relates to “best practices” of life safety and security protocols. Provides articles and "white papers" on procedures relative to safety and security topics to be distributed to IAAM members and the general public / industry through print and electronic distribution. Collect safety tips and write pertinent articles and news stories for the IAAM E-News, Facility Manager magazine or other related publications.
