Name: Dana L.
Abbott-Glazier, CAE
Position:
Director of Education
Describe some of your
responsibilities:
I work with the
volunteer committees and
boards to determine and
plan the educational
offerings, specifically
the content of the IAAM
conferences, web
educational resources
and schools, such as the
Public Assembly Facility
Management Schools (PAFMS
and Graduate Institute),
Senior Executive
Symposium (SES), and the
European Academy for
Venue Management (EAVM).
I am also responsible
for the Certified
Facilities Executive (CFE)
program and its
development and growth.
How long have you been
with IAAM: I have
been with IAAM for seven
terrific years. I am
excited to have
witnessed tremendous
progress in the
association in that
short amount of time:
from the time of
cutbacks in order to
keep the IAAM World
Headquarters building,
to the strengthening of
staff through
reorganizations and the
addition of several
talented individuals to
the team, to the
continuing inroads with
Europe and VMA.
Favorite Part of IAAM:
I have always enjoyed
helping people; and at
IAAM, I’m happy to do it
every day because it’s
more than just helping
people it’s helping
members and volunteers
who are like family and
friends.
What are some exciting
things coming up in your
area that you would like
our members to know
about? We still
have a few seats to the
Graduate Institute, May
31-June 5, 2008 in
Wheeling, West Virginia,
and the Senior Executive
Symposium application
deadline is April 30.
They are both excellent
programs for those that
have completed the
two-week program at
PAFMS and are looking to
take their professional
development to the next
level. The Certification
Board is looking at
accrediting the CFE
program to meet
international standards,
as well as continue to
promote the program by
demonstrating that many
paths can lead to
certification. On the
education side, you’ll
see more content on the
web as we put a stronger
emphasis on capturing
content at the
conferences so that it
will be available at any
time.
How do you hope to add
value to the IAAM
Members? Recently
I earned my
certification in the
association industry,
the Certified
Association Executive
(CAE) designation
through American Society
of Association
Executives (ASAE). While
working toward the CAE,
I learned about best
practices and trends in
associations. I plan to
keep up the education
and networking to ensure
continual improvement.
Who/What inspires
you?
Personally, my family
inspires me. I am
blessed with three
talented and caring
children who never cease
to amaze me and two
loving and healthy
parents who are always
available with advice
and support.
At work, I’m impressed
with Dexter’s
experience, knowledge
and passion. It’s very
motivational to hear his
vision for the
association. I’ve met
executive directors from
other associations, even
some who served as
volunteer leaders within
their association prior
to taking the chief
executive staff
position, and the vast
majority does not hold a
candle to Dexter.
What is something that
the members don’t know
about you?
Well, maybe there’s a
reason they don’t know!
; )
Earlier in my life, I
worked as an assistant
store manager for a
major music store chain
and fit in most
appropriately with black
eyeliner and dyed black
hair. I thought I would
work there forever and
had my goal set to be
the district manager by
the time I was 30. Thank
goodness that plans
change; otherwise I
might still be in the
floundering retail music
industry! My expertise
(and favorite part) was
finding songs for
customers who would come
in and say “Who sings
the song that goes….” It
was even more fun when
they’d sing it to me. My
‘training’ will serve me
well when I’m a
contestant on Don’t
Forget the Lyrics.
Hobbies: Music
will always be a
passion. I enjoy live
music and am always on
the lookout for upcoming
shows. On my calendar
currently, I have Bleu
Edmondson, a local
country rock singer, and
Panic at the Disco. I’ve
seen Prince eight times
in three different
cities, San Francisco,
Dallas and London.
